Surely enough, the bookmaking industry is not the last to benefit from it, as the best betting sites for football contend for the attention of the bettors and put forward some of the most enticing Champions League odds to attract the punters. Let’s find out what makes millions of fans worldwide await fixtures for this spectacular event.

The UEFA Champions League is an annual international football tournament organised by the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) among the top-division clubs in Europe. It is Europe’s most prestigious club football tournament. From its first edition in 1955/56 up until 1991/92 it was known as the European Champion Clubs’ Cup. In 1991/92 the format was changed, and group stages were played after the 1/8 finals. That was when the well-known anthem and logo of the UEFA Champions League were introduced. Since the 1992/93 season, the tournament bears its current name.

The tournament has been won by 22 clubs, 12 of which have won the tournament more than once. Spanish clubs have won the tournament 19 times. The record number of titles won is held by Real Madrid, who have been victorious 14 times. Since changing the name and format of the tournament in 1992, only Real Madrid have managed to win the Champions League for three consecutive seasons (2015/2016, 2016/2017, and 2017/2018). Real Madrid is also the club that has won the Champions League the most times since the format change — eight times.

UEFA — Where European Football Thrives

UEFA, or Union of European Football Associations, is the sports organisation governing football in Europe and some western Asian regions. UEFA was founded on 15 June 1954 in Basel (Switzerland) following discussions between the French, Italian and Belgian FAs. UEFA was originally made up of 25 countries and now has 55. Since 1995 it has been based in Nyon, Switzerland.

This organization brings together all national football associations of European countries, manages all European competitions for clubs and national teams, and distributes advertising and broadcasting revenue to members.

UEFA is one of the six continental confederations that make up FIFA, and it is widely considered to be its most influential and wealthy. Many of the world’s top players now reside in Europe due to the lucrative salaries there — particularly in England, France, Italy, Spain and Germany. Furthermore, many of UEFA’s strongest national teams are represented at major tournaments; 14 out of 32 teams were represented at the 2006 FIFA Women’s World Cup alone!

How the Format of UEFA Champions League Developed

To get a deeper understanding of how qualification and drawing system works for UEFA Champions League, let’s go back to the conception of the Champions League and track some of the most significant change in its growth. These aspects directly correlate with the way UEFA Champions League odds are calculated, and these are key to know when it comes to some of the special betting offers that online bookmakers feature.

In 1955, French sports journalist and L’Equipe editor Gabriel Hanot proposed to found the European Champions Cup after reading claims by English media that Wolverhampton Wanderers, who had recently defeated Spartak and Gonved in 1954, were the strongest club in the world. Hanot responded in his newspaper that a competition involving both home and away matches was necessary to identify this top club; on the following day Hanot published an initial draft of the tournament and two months later in January 1955 the inaugural European Champion’s Cup took place.

The first European Cup in 1955/56 was an elimination tournament, with every round played in two matches (home and away). Until 1992, the national champions and the last winner of the European Cup took part in the championship. From 1991/92 onwards a group stage was added and in the following year the tournament’s name was changed to the Champions League. Many changes have been made to the number of qualification stages and group structure over the years, such as adding second-place national teams into the tournament in 1997/98. Furthermore, qualifying rounds were reorganized so that champions from countries with a low UEFA coefficient could take part in one or more qualification rounds before the group stage, while teams from countries with a high coefficient would enter the competition later. At present, four clubs represent each top-ranked nation in the Champions League.

An important consideration is that the number of places in the draw depends on the UEFA coefficient. According to it, associations ranked 1 to 4 in the table represent the first 4 teams, from 5th to 6th represent the first 3 teams, from 7 to 15 represent the first 2 teams, 16th or lower in the table represent 1 team.

The place in the table also determines from which stage the clubs enter the draw. For example 4 clubs from each of the first 4 qualify for the group stage, but the associations ranked lowest in the table represent 1 team from the qualification stage.

As of the 2015/16 season, the maximum quota of five teams per country has been increased to five due to the admission of the previous season’s winner of the UEFA Champions League. Now, teams ranked fourth or higher in one of the top three countries will qualify for participation in the UEFA Champions League only if both previous season’s UEFA European Cup winners from that same country do not make it.

UEFA Champions League — How the Game is Played

The tournament consists of several stages and begins with five qualification rounds, including the preliminary one. Teams play two games each (home and away). The winner advances to the next qualification round. After both rounds have been completed, the teams qualify for group stage along with those that qualified directly through draw results. They are divided into 8 groups with four teams in each. Following this group stage, two first teams advance to play-offs while the third one qualifies for 1/16 finals of the Europa League before drawing for 1/8 finals follows.

The results are presented in the following way. Representatives of the same country (association) and teams from the same group must not play each other. Group winners play the second-ranked teams. The first place winners play the first away matches.

The teams play 2 matches each, which decide who advances to the quarter-finals. The draw at this stage is unrestricted. The quarter-finals are followed by the semi-finals and then the final, consisting of one match in a neutral stadium. The stadium is selected in advance by the UEFA committee from the applicants. It must meet all the necessary requirements, having a high UEFA rating.

UEFA has developed a list of criteria that contribute to rating stadiums. The system used to include five stars, however it has been replaced by a four-tier system. The standards are very high for these venues, and only 27 stadiums worldwide can currently enjoy the elite rank.

Maximise the Benefits of the Best Betting Sites for Football

Betting on such an exciting event may seem intimidating, but with careful research and the assistance of the best betting sites, you’re guaranteed to make this year’s Championship League both memorable and profitable.

Football betting consists of two primary forms: pre-match betting and live betting. Live betting refers to placing bets on events that have just begun, usually through In-play sections at sportsbooks that make them easily accessible. If you wish to place a live bet, make sure your chosen bookmaker provides features like cash out and streaming to make the best use of this opportunity.

One tip for the Championship League is to wait for in-play betting options if you didn’t manage to catch lucrative prematch odds. Doing this allows you to sit back and wait for a more equitable offer, sometimes even an generous one, when the scenario changes. Doing this helps avoid undervalued odds and allows you to make different bets as the match progresses, thus avoiding losses that prematch wagering would have caused.

It is crucial to do thorough research about the team’s performance before you place a bet on the Champions League. Account for H2H statistics and current form as well as transfers and injuries. Generally, new betting sites feature these records in full, which can greatly help you plan your betting strategy.

The Champions League is full of intense and uncompromising football. That is why draws in this tournament are not as frequent as in other games. 2022 was no exception, with only 19 of the 96 games ending in a draw (19.7%). The highest draw rate in the group stage stands at 30.2%, and it’s rather an exception to the rule, as this figure is strikingly different from the statistics of the rest of the seasons. The rate of draw fluctuates from 16% to 22% making the trend pretty clear and predictable from season to season.

It can be difficult to choose the right team for a Champions League 2023 bet. At the same time, Champions League gives rise to plenty of rewarding betting opportunities, so it’s wise to make use of free bets to pick the sportsbook that suits you best and maximise your profits by finding the best value teams. The key to making the best wager is evaluating the chances of each team winning. Take time to examine the team you’re going to place your bet on: their strengths, weaknesses, and the kind of competition they will face during their league journey.

The Champions League is a unique tournament, as there is a marked gap between the clubs, and it grows year by year because the financial capacity of some giants doesn’t allow the newcomers to lift off.

However, it makes no sense to pick the clear bookmakers’ favourites in the top teams’ games. For example, in the first round, Real Madrid will play against Italian Roma and the odds on the reigning Champions League winner are awfully low. Meanwhile, the teams have had changes in the off-season, Real Madrid is just learning to play without Ronaldo, while Roma made some noise last year too.
